Discover Golf in Portugal

Enhanced by being on the western edge of the European continent, Portugal has a long Atlantic coast line which has contributed to its rich seafaring heritage; it was from there that in 1415 a new breed of conquerors sailed to establish new ocean routes and discovered new continents. With a mild climate, diverse cultural attractions, and a wide range of entertainment choices, make Portugal a wonderful all-round holiday destination, as well as a golfer’s paradise.

Golf was introduced in Portugal in the 19th century when a group of British wine exporters formed the Oporto Niblicks Club in 1890 (later renamed Oporto Golf Club in 1901). Sir Henry Cotton started the Portuguese golf boom with the world famous Penina Golf Course which is the oldest course in the most popular holiday destination of the country, the Algarve.

Since then to the present more than 80 golf courses have been inaugurated, most of them are concentrated in the country’s most popular holiday destinations regions: the Algarve, Lisbon Coast and Madeira.

While in Northern Europe most of the golf courses are closed due to the harsh winters, Portugal is one of the most wanted golf destinations in the continent receiving more than 400,000 golfers annually.
